Baptism Guidelines

Baptisms are celebrated at St. Clare by our priests or those who have permission from their parish and our Pastor.

These guidelines apply to children under the age of 7.

The first step is to schedule a Baptismal Interview with the priest. Parents should call the parish office at least two (2) months before the desired date of Baptism to schedule the interview with the priest.  You will be informed of all the requirements and the dates available for Baptism. Parents must bring a copy of their child’s Birth Certificate.

Baptisms are celebrated in Spanish on the 3rd Saturday of the month and in English on the 4th Saturday of the month at 10 AM. There will be no more than 6 infants during the baptismal ceremony.

A mandatory baptism preparation class is required for both parents and godparents. Baptismal preparation class is offered in Spanish on the first Monday of the month and in English on the second Monday of the month, from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

Godparent/Sponsor Requirements

The role of the godparent(s) is to join the parents in presenting the child for baptism, to assist the parents in passing the Catholic faith on to the child, and to represent the community in accepting the child as a member of the Church. This is not just an honorary role, but rather a role of great significance and responsibility. For this reason, there are several requirements:

One godparent /sponsor must be chosen and should:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation in the Catholic Church.
  • Participate regularly in the worship life of the Catholic Church and lead a life of faith.
  • Not be the father or mother of the child to be baptized.

If there is a second godparent, according to the Canon Law, this person must be of the opposite gender of the first sponsor.

Offering-Donation

An offering reflects a commitment to responsible Christian stewardship. A suggested donation of a minimum of $150 is greatly appreciated. The donation is to be given on the day that the baptism is arranged in the parish office.

Private Baptism

Communal Baptisms are preferred since they show solidarity and fraternity in the community. However, occasionally the celebration of private baptisms is offered. If a private baptism is requested the parents will have to talk to one of our priests to schedule the date with them since it depends on their availability. Usually the baptism is scheduled in the Rectory Chapel. All requirements mentioned above need to be fulfilled.

The suggested donation is $300.
